What does PSF ONLUS do?
PSF was established in 2007 with the idea that, in the era of globalization and in a world marked by new technologies of communication, psychology has to overcome the frontiers that have limited its field of action, frontiers not only of geopolitical order, but primarily cultural and scientific. For this reason the association, as well as being involved in international cooperation, promoting volunteering experiences for young psychologists in developing countries worldwide, is active in an European network of associations involved in the social use of new technologies .

Where does PSF work?
PSF is active in various countries of South America, with projects in Brazil, Argentina, Perù, Ecuador. Some initiatives have been taken forward in Asia, particularly in Thailand and in the Philippines. These projects are developed in collaboration with associations in the territories and they are designed especially for women and children.

What are the necessary skills?
PSF is mainly addressed to the world of psychologists, however, it is not necessary to be graduated. Indeed,  volunteers who have to complete their studies have the particularly useful opportunity to do internships and learning experiences in the field. We believe, in fact, that the best way to build your skills is direct experience. What, however, is particularly required is a good planning and collaborative ability  to work with others. Besides, a certain sensibility is required, not only concerning ethic but also in terms of ability to adapt to any difficulties which are always inherent in the contexts, often disadvantaged, in which our organization operates.

I don’t have the opportunity to travel abroad. How can I be useful?
The first way to help us is becoming a member of PSF or donate. The association survives on the contributions of volunteers that, taking part in various activities especially in the national headquarters of the association in Padua, can provide valuable support to the growth of the organization. As an example, it is possible to contribute helping with the training management, the public relations, the information material and maintaining contacts with foreign volunteers, as well as with marketing and promotion.

What kind of interventions does PSF implement in Italy?
PSF, besides working in international cooperation projects, is involved in some local initiatives, particularly in the Italian North-East, with particular reference to the national headquarters of Padua. These local projects concern primarily the prevention, whether related to youth problems, road safety, alcohol and drug abuse. Operating through peer operators groups formed by our experts, our field operations are  intended to inform about the risks people can face in certain situations. We operate mainly in schools and youth meeting points. Innovative methods are also applied, such as video games.

What is the minimum duration of the volunteer experience?
Volunteering abroad requires fairly long periods of time. Usually, after a period of training provided to the candidates to be held in Italy, PSF asks for a period of at least six months in the country where they will operate. This is true for the Latin-speaking countries, especially in South America where cultural and linguistic distances are lower than in other countries. In Asia, particularly Thailand, PSF requires longer periods of stay, ranging from nine to twelve months, so that to learn cultural and linguistic aspects: this will provide the volunteer with the tools to be effectively able to work on the first line.

What are the costs for the volunteer?
The costs that the volunteer will have to sustain are mainly those of travel and insurance. The insurance also provides for the purchase of any materials useful to the scientific and technical work of the volunteer and for vaccinations. Room and board, on the contrary, are provided in principle by PSF, thanks to agreements signed with local projects for which PSF collaborating. Any extra expenses during the stay is sustained by the volunteer.

How do I reconcile my study activities with that association?
There are several cooperating volunteers who come to us  during their studies to develop a thesis or an internship abroad: fifty thesis projects have already been followed and completed. Internships, however, are more difficult, as the legislation requires PSF and the University of Padua to sign a special agreement  with an local university institution every time the training takes place outside the European Community.  Unfortunately, this connection is not always available.
